Principal's Message

August 18, 2020

Dear Betty Jane Families,

We are looking forward to seeing everyone as we kick off the new academic year! It has been a long summer, and we want to make sure that everyone has all of the information that our young scholars need to have a successful school year. As all of you know, we will be learning remotely for the first 9 weeks of school. During this time, we will have students participate during scheduled learning times with their teachers.  We want to ensure that all of our parents have everything that they need to support their children during this time. We have opted to have Open House serve as an opportunity to distribute needed materials to our learners and also acquaint them with their teachers. We want to kick the year off with an in-person smile. Our Open House will be held on two separate days this year.

Our first day of Open House will be on September 8, 2020 from 3:00-5:00 pm. This is for our families of students in grades 2 & 3. Every family will pull into the parking lot as normal. Families with students in grades 2 will pull through the loop and up to Door 7 (at the end of our walkway in front).  There will be a station for teachers to go to cars and distribute materials needed for learning.  Grade 3 families will pull in the same entrance, but go directly to the front of the building. We ask our families to pull into the curb lane and all the way down to Door 2 (the gymnasium doors). Third grade teachers will be stationed there to distribute materials as well. During this time parents can meet teachers.

Our second day of Open House will be on September 9, 2020 from 3:00-5:00. This Open House session will be for students in grades 4 & 5. Grade 4 families will drive down to the loop and up to door number 7 ( at the end of the walkway), and Grade 5 families will drive directly to the front of the building and move down to the pickup area by door 2 (the gymnasium doors).

Open House for Kindergarten and 1st grade students will be held during private appointments. These students will have scheduled appointments for their  screening assessments on Tuesday, September 8th, Wednesday September 9th and Thursday September 10th during allocated time slots. We have been reaching out to all of these parents to schedule the appointments. If you have not made an appointment for your child to be screened, please call the school as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

Please note: The district has chosen to have staggered start dates for various grades in the district this school year. This is to assist with transitions.

  • Thursday, September 10th- The first day for Students in grades 2, 3 & 4.

  • Friday, September 11th- The first day for students in grade 5.

  • Monday, September 14th- The first Day for students in kindergarten and 1st grades.

The entire staff of Betty Jane CLC wishes to welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year!   We look forward to continuing our partnership in supporting your child’s education. Together, we can make a difference in the education, safety, well-being, and future of every child.  Over the first few days of school, you can expect to see quite a bit of correspondence such as classroom schedules and virtual norms for learners.  Many parents are asking how they can help to prepare their child for virtual learning.  The main thing is to ensure your child has a quiet work environment where he/she can participate in lessons free from distraction and keep learning tools organized.  It may also be helpful to ensure your child has ear buds and his/her chromebook charger in this area each day. School supplies such as crayons, paper, pencils, glue sticks and scissors are also going to be needed, as well as folders to organize assignments. You will most likely have to help your learner for the first few days of online instruction, especially if your child is younger and still getting used to using the technology), but soon you should be able to step back as they do it independently. It is surprising how quickly they learn to navigate with the technology.

On behalf of our entire school family, thank you for selecting Betty Jane Community Learning Center.  I look forward to working with you and your child.  The All Call System, emails, and our website will be used to inform you of school activities and events throughout the year. Please also refer to our Betty Jane weblink on the Akron Public Schools webpage for additional information regarding announcements and celebrations at our building. We also have school supply lists posted on our Betty Jane website to assist with your school shopping needs.  We look forward to meeting each of you during our Open House and screening appointments.  Enjoy the remainder of your summer.  Should you have questions, please contact the school office at (330) 761-2602. Please note that our school phone number was changed over the summer. Please update this change in your address book.

Sincerely,

Ms. Lucas & Mrs. Schmidt

CURT- Can you please proofread for me and make any needed revisions?

Hello Betty Jane Families! It looks like we are heading into the winter season with vigor! This is just a reminder for families to use the loop if the traffic is to the end of the curb which runs along the front of the school, or if there are folks who are already waiting in line from the other direction to drop their child off. I just want to ensure that there are no traffic backups into Darrow Road which may prohibit any of our Betty Jane Family Members from entering into our lot safely. This is especially a concern as road conditions become icy and stopping distances are affected. The safety and well being of our entire Batty Jane family is our top concern.

Also, just a reminder regarding dress down days. Every Friday is school spirit-wear day. This means that students may wear Betty Jane/ Ellet apparel but they must also must wear uniform bottoms.  Spirit day Fridays are not a full dress down day because students must still wear uniform bottoms. I thank you all for working with us on a daily basis to provide our children with the very best educational opportunities. Your continual reinforcement at home on the skills students obtain at school are necessary to continue showing increased academic success.
