This is a reminder that tomorrow, Wednesday, March 18, and Thursday, March 19th,  is material pickup at Betty Jane from 9:30-11:30 am. As you know, Betty Jane is a little different from other other APS schools as we were not in session last Friday. 

The purpose of these two days is for students to pick up all items from their desks and lockers, and for kindergarten through second grade students to also obtain their Chromebooks. We want our students to have their supplies and materials at home so they can complete assignments and activities. Since our whole school did not gather materials on Friday, and we wish to minimize large gatherings, procedures for the next two days will be as follows:

 On Wednesday, 3/18 from 9:30 to 11:30 - Students with last names beginning with A through G

may report to Betty Jane to pick up their personal items.

On Thursday, 3/19, students with last names beginning with H-Z may report to pick up their items. 

Once again, this procedure is for Betty Jane School only.

Parents, please have students bring a bag to use as they empty their personal effects, otherwise we only have large see through trash bags that are not very sturdy and may drag on the ground as students walk with them. 

  • Lunches distributed by Akron Schools for student pick up will be stationed by the gymnasium doors this  Wednesday and Thursday only. After that, lunches will continue to be distributed from the front vestibule every Monday-Thursday as planned. 
  • Grades 3-5 students will be permitted to enter door 7. Door 7 is the front door nearest to the entrance of our parking lot and is labeled accordingly. Students will enter the building a few students at a time. I am asking for grade 3-5 students to complete this task independently without parents having to enter the building. Grades 3-5 students will proceed up the stairs and to their classrooms to gather their personal effects. They will be directed to walk down the main staircase and exit directly through the gym doors back into the parking lot to meet their parents at a specified location that they have pre-chosen.
  • Grades K-2 students will enter the main doors a few students at a time. Students will proceed to their classrooms and gather their personal effects from lockers, desks and chair pouches on their own. ONLY K-2 parents, may enter the building with their child. While students gather their personal items from classrooms, parents will proceed to the cafeteria to retrieve their child’s chromebook and meet them by the gym doors. Parents, please wait for your child to exit so we do not have any students separated from their adult.

If Parents are unable to bring their child to retrieve items on these days and are sending their child with another adult, please share this information with that individual.

  • If needed, students may obtain a bagged lunch on their way out of the gymnasium door exit. (The gym doors are the ones students use to exit the building for the Halloween parade, on the south end of our building facing Newton St./Leonardo’s direction).
  • We will continue this process until all students are able to gather their personal items on Wednesday and Thursday. 
  • After items are picked up, I ask that folks exit the school premises to allow space for other families to park and also to promote social distancing. 

Once again, I apologize in advance for the extra time that this process may take, but this plan was created with the goal of minimizing the large numbers of individuals inside of our building at one time. Please remember that our first priority is the safety and well-being of our children. Please be patient as we work through this process for the next two days as students retrieve materials. 

Directions regarding online lessons will be provided in future all calls and also on the Akron Public Schools Website. Parents, as we work through these unprecedented times, please continue to follow guidance to keep yourselves and your families well. Students, please know that we miss you and look forward to being together as a school family again. Many of your teachers have already been reaching out to you via phone calls, emails, Google Classroom and ClassTag. Just know that you are loved dearly. What can you do to continue making us proud, Betty Jane Students? Please continue to help your parents with chores, complete online lessons, practice your handwriting, and read for at least 30 minutes each and every day! Everyone in the Betty Jane Family, please take care, and I hope to see you all soon!
