Dear Betty Jane Families, August 26, 2021



Hello, Betty Jane families! I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone that attended our Open House and kindergarten orientation this week. It was great seeing everyone again and allowing our children the opportunity to walk to their classrooms with their parents. Hopefully this experience will alleviate any “first-day jitters” that students and parents may have had. 

There are some additional information and reminders I wish to share with families.  Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, we will not be permitted to have parents escort students to their classrooms on their first day of school. Parents will be able to drop students off at the front doors at 8:00 for breakfast and at 8:15 if they do not wish to eat a school breakfast. Staff members will be on duty to direct students to their classrooms, so please do not worry about your children during drop off. We promise to take great care of our children. 

Students in 4th & 5th grades will begin the school year on Monday, August 30, 2021. Incoming kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students will have their first day of school on Thursday, September 2, 2021. This varied start date will assist our younger learners with a smooth transition into their school experience, and individualized screening appointments will allow them the opportunity to visit their classrooms prior to the first day of school. 

  • Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students will have scheduled appointments for Screening Assessments from August 30th through September 1st. If you have not made an appointment for your child to be screened, please call the school as soon as possible to schedule your appointment.  

 Please note: The district has chosen to have staggered start dates for various grades in the district this school year. This is to assist with transitions. I have attached the drop off /pick up procedures for our building, and a district calendar to assist families that may also have students in other grade levels within the Akron Public Schools. 

Dress Code

Uniforms have been suspended for this school year. We will still have a dress code to follow. The dress code we will be following is the one for students in grades 9-12. I have included a copy of this dress code for your convenience.



Student Classroom Assignments

Classroom Assignments were sent home in June on student report cards. Additional staff members will be available on the first day to assist students who don’t recall their new homeroom assignment.


To better assist families in planning for drop off and pick up on the first day and beyond, I have also included procedures from the Betty -Jane Student Handbook for your review. I ask that everyone read the procedures carefully so we operate under the same family norms. The entire handbook will be coming home with students during the first week of school. 




On behalf of our entire school family, thank you for selecting Betty Jane Community Learning Center.  I look forward to working with you and your child.  The All Call System and fliers will be used to inform you of school activities and events throughout the year. Please also refer to our Betty Jane weblink on the Akron Public Schools webpage for additional information regarding events and achievements at our building. CAR PICK UP DIAGRAM

Our car drop off and pick up line follows the same route in the morning and the afternoon. It is a single file line and is the safest way to drop off or pick up students. Please refer to this diagram as the route you would drive for arrival and dismissal. 


Please note that protocol is to pull into the lot and proceed around the loop toward the front of the building to drop students off in the curb lane only. This is a safeguard to ensure that our families may all pull in safely from the busy Darrow Road entrance.  We are a family and treat each other with respect. Please do not drive past people to the front of the line or pull into parking spaces to let children out of your vehicle. Be patient and wait your turn in line.


Students who are walking home from school will be dismissed out the playground doors at the back of the building. There are walking paths for students to use as they walk to meet their vehicles in an off-site location.  There is no parking available in the school parking lot for student pick up at dismissal, so please arrange for your child to meet you at your vehicle at an off-site location. No students are permitted to enter the parking lot area. 


Akron Public Schools Board of Education has suspended uniform requirements for grades K-8 for the 2021-22 school year. All other elements of the APS Dress Code will be enforced.
